Aviaries
My breeding flights are 5’ wide by 14’ long by 8’ high, my breeding pairs of Major Mitchells are content with this size and breed freely, although, bigger is always better. The flights consist of 2 - 3 nest boxes to allow the birds a choice, of which they tend to choose one for breeding and use this for many years.

They chew parts of the other boxes into chippings over the course of the season, this may be looked on as a waste, but in my opinion it helps to keep the birds mentally active and content.

The aviaries are constructed from inch by inch 10 gauge mesh and have galvanised solid sheet partitioning. I use solid partitions due to the fact that in the wild major Mitchells tend to be territorial breeders. The sub-straight on the aviary floor is 15mm pea shingle, I use this as it is easy cleaning and I have watched my birds spend a lot of time digging around on the floor looking for morsels.
