I have found that one of the most important factors when breeding the Major Mitchell Cockatoo is having good healthy birds with a strong pair bond. The best way to achieve this is to acquire sexed birds and pair them while they are still young or to buy unrelated young sexed pairs. As these birds mature they will be devoted to each other and develop a strong pair bond. While these birds are maturing you as a keeper will get to know your birds characters and habits, this will lead to better breeding results. Even breeding birds with this background can show signs of aggression, this is very rare and there are many opinions what this is due to; jealousy, breeding cycles, or just that the birds want new partners.
In my opinion any birds that show aggression to the point of drawing blood should be split. As a responsible keeper close monitoring for any signs of aggression should be maintained when the birds are entering the breeding season. |
